Homework
At Our Lady & St Joseph Catholic Primary School, we believe that homework should strengthen the partnership between home and school, reinforce key learning and foster a love of learning beyond the classroom. Our homework approach focuses on the essential foundations of reading, spelling and mathematics, alongside wider curriculum enrichment activities that encourage independence, curiosity and creativity.
We believe that reading every day is one of the most important things a child can do to support their learning. Reading is the key that unlocks the entire curriculum; confident readers are better able to access learning across all subjects, develop their vocabulary, deepen their understanding and become successful lifelong learners. Alongside daily reading, regular practice of spellings and key mathematical facts helps children to build fluency, improve retention and develop confidence in the classroom. When children can quickly recall number facts and spell common words accurately, they are able to focus more effectively on higher-level learning and problem-solving.
As a Catholic school, our Religious Education homework is the same for every child because we want families to learn, reflect and grow in faith together, with Christ at the centre of family life. Through shared RE activities and projects, we aim to strengthen the connection between home, school and parish, enabling children and their families to live out our mission of loving, listening and learning together. Together, we believe that strong partnerships between school and home provide the foundations for every child to flourish academically, spiritually and personally.
