School Council at OLSJ
At OLSJ, we believe pupil voice is extremely important and that every child should have opportunities to share their ideas, opinions and experiences. Our School Council plays a vital role in ensuring that children are active participants in school life and helps develop leadership, responsibility and confidence across the school community.
Each year, children interested in becoming School Councillors take part in a real-life democratic process. Pupils prepare and present speeches to their classes explaining why they would like to represent their peers before classmates take part in a voting process. This links closely to British Values, particularly Democracy and the Rule of Law, helping children understand fairness, responsibility and how decisions are made within society.
Our School Council Team is made up of enthusiastic pupils who are proud to represent the voices of children across the school and are supported by Miss Webber in their leadership roles.
This year, our School Council will work together to:
-
Share ideas and suggestions with their classmates
-
Help plan exciting school events
-
Discuss ways to improve school life
-
Promote inclusion and pupil wellbeing
-
Work collaboratively with staff to solve problems
-
Help make OLSJ an even happier place to learn
School Councillors regularly meet with Miss Webber to discuss pupil voice, share feedback from their classes and work together on initiatives that positively impact the whole school community. After meetings, councillors return to their classes to share updates and gather further ideas from their peers.
Through these leadership opportunities, children develop many important skills, including:
-
Confidence and communication
-
Leadership and responsibility
-
Teamwork and collaboration
-
Respect for others’ views
-
Problem-solving and decision-making
-
Active citizenship
These experiences strongly support children’s personal development and help prepare them for life beyond primary school by encouraging them to become respectful, responsible and active members of society. With their kindness, creativity and teamwork, our School Councillors help ensure every child feels included, listened to and proud to be part of our OLSJ family.
