Music is integral to life at OLSJ. Children take part in one Music lesson every week, delivered by a specialist Music teacher. The lessons not only cover the National Curriculum but children also apply their understanding of the inter-related dimensions of music, developed from an early age, to a variety of projects which make cross-curricular links with their learning in other subject areas. Children who are identified as Gifted and Talented are offered extra one-to-one support by the Music teacher to nurture their talents. In addition to this, all children regularly practice singing throughout the week during hymn practices, assemblies, and Mass. Each child participates in a variety of performances over the year.
In addition to their classroom learning, OLSJ offer a wide variety of extra-curricular activities. The choir rehearses on a weekly basis and represents the school in the local community as well as in events further afield. A specialist woodwind teacher from the Tower Hamlets Arts and Music Education Service (THAMES) provides instrumental lessons for KS2 children as well as whole class recorder lessons for Year 3. We are also fortunate to have a professional guitar and saxophone tutor offering lessons to children from Year 4 and 5. Children who participate in extra-curricular music lessons are encouraged to take the lead in the many performance opportunities offered at OLSJ, such as assemblies, concerts, shows, and Mass.
