Zones of Regulation
At OLSJ, we use the Zones of Regulation to help children understand, manage and communicate their feelings and emotions. The Zones provide a simple framework that teaches children that all feelings are normal and that we can learn strategies to help us regulate our emotions and be ready to learn.
It is OK to Have Big Feelings
One of the most important messages we teach our children is that it is okay to have big feelings. Everyone experiences a range of emotions throughout the day. Feeling worried, frustrated, excited, angry or overwhelmed is a normal part of being human.
Rather than trying to stop these feelings, we help children recognise them, understand them and learn healthy ways to express them. We teach children that emotions are not "good" or "bad" – what matters is how we respond to them.
Our goal is to help children develop the skills to regulate themselves and return to the Green Zone, where they feel calm, focused and ready to learn.
Learning Regulation is a Skill
Just like learning to play football, ride a bike or play a musical instrument, self-regulation is a skill that develops through practice.
We encourage children to think of regulation strategies as tools that become more effective the more they are used. A footballer does not become skilled overnight; they practise regularly and learn from their experiences. In the same way, children learn which strategies work best for them and become increasingly confident in using them independently.
One of the strengths of our approach is that children often become excellent role models for one another, sharing ideas and encouraging their peers to use helpful strategies.
Explicit Teaching
Each half term, all classes take part in dedicated Zones of Regulation lessons. During these sessions, children learn about emotions, self-awareness, self-regulation and wellbeing through age-appropriate activities and discussion.
Children regularly revisit their learning throughout the year to strengthen their understanding and build confidence in applying their skills in different situations.
Personalised Toolkits
Every child creates their own personalised Regulation Toolkit. These toolkits contain strategies and supports that help them regulate their emotions and manage challenges successfully.
As children grow and develop, their toolkits are reviewed and updated each half term to reflect their changing needs and experiences.
Some children may receive additional support from staff when creating and using their toolkits to ensure they have strategies that are meaningful, accessible and effective for them.
Strategies We Use
Children are taught a range of practical regulation strategies, including:
-
Breath 6 breathing
-
Speaking to a trusted adult
-
Movement and sensory breaks
-
Drinking water
-
Mindful breathing
-
Taking time in a calm space
-
Positive self-talk
-
Stretching and physical activity
-
Using visual supports and prompts
Through regular practice, children learn when and how to use these strategies independently.
Working Together
By teaching the Zones of Regulation, we help our children develop emotional awareness, resilience and confidence. These skills support learning, strengthen relationships and promote positive mental health.
Most importantly, our children learn that all feelings are welcome, that everyone needs support sometimes, and that with practice they can develop the tools they need to navigate life's challenges successfully.
