PE
"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." (Philippians 4:13)
At Our Lady & St Joseph Catholic Primary School, we are committed to providing a high-quality Physical Education curriculum that inspires all children to develop a lifelong love of physical activity, sport and healthy living. Physical Education plays a vital role in promoting children's physical development, wellbeing, teamwork, resilience and self-confidence.
We are fortunate to have two specialist PE HLTAs who work alongside staff to deliver high-quality lessons across the school. This collaborative approach ensures that children receive expert teaching, staff continue to develop their own subject knowledge and the quality of PE provision remains consistently high.
Our ambitious PE curriculum provides children with opportunities to develop fundamental movement skills, physical competence and confidence through a wide range of sporting activities. These include dance, gymnastics, swimming, athletics, invasion games, striking and fielding games, racket sports and outdoor and adventurous activities. Lessons are carefully planned to ensure progression in knowledge, skills and vocabulary, whilst adaptive teaching strategies ensure that all children can access, participate and achieve success regardless of their starting points.
We recognise the importance of promoting active lifestyles beyond PE lessons. Children are encouraged to be physically active during breaktimes and lunchtimes through access to a variety of equipment and structured activities. Our specialist PE HLTAs and dedicated Midday Meals Supervisors work together to engage children in a range of inclusive games and activities during lunchtimes, encouraging participation, teamwork, enjoyment and positive social interaction. This helps to ensure that children remain active throughout the school day and develop healthy habits that support their physical and emotional wellbeing.
As part of our commitment to promoting health and wellbeing, we offer a Daily Mile each morning. All children are invited to participate and are encouraged to challenge themselves to improve their fitness, stamina and overall wellbeing. Staff regularly join in alongside pupils, acting as positive role models and demonstrating the importance of maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle. From September 2026, on days when the weather prevents outdoor participation, children will take part in Just Dance sessions indoors to ensure that daily physical activity continues and that our commitment to promoting healthy, active lifestyles remains uninterrupted.
A wide range of extra-curricular sports clubs are offered throughout the week, providing opportunities for children to develop existing skills, discover new interests and participate in additional physical activity. Club provision is reviewed regularly and rotates throughout the year to ensure that as many children as possible can access these opportunities.
Competitive sport is an important part of life at OLSJ. Children are given regular opportunities to represent the school in local cluster events, borough-wide competitions and cross-borough sporting tournaments. These experiences help to develop sportsmanship, determination, teamwork and pride in representing the school community.
We are also committed to providing opportunities for all children to experience competition and personal achievement. Throughout the year, pupils participate in internal tournaments, intra-school competitions and Sports Day events, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to challenge themselves, celebrate success and develop a positive attitude towards physical activity.
Through our PE curriculum and wider sporting opportunities, we aim to develop confident, resilient and active learners who understand the importance of leading healthy, balanced lives both now and in the future.
