Our Topic for RE this half term is Kingdom of God. Miss Lynch did a learning walk of lesson observation this week and got to see an excellent understanding of how Pope Francis responds to social and moral issues because of his faith in God. In Year 6 children explored a newspaper article about Pope Francis’ thoughts on people feeling isolated online versus people being connected and authenticity of information found online. Links were made with Scripture and children’s own experiences. In Year 5, children recapped their prior knowledge of the Creation story and explored the social action he has written about in his encyclical Laudato Si and what he has asked every person in our common home to do to ensure Mother Earth is here for future generations. Billy in Year 5 said; ‘ It is our duty to take care of the earth so that my children and then their children will have a place to live’. In Year 1, Miss Hussey’s class, children learned about the role of Pope Francis in the Catholic Church and recognising and describing the key message in Laudato Si. In Year 4, children recapped the Creation Story in the bible and made links with both of Pope Francis’ encyclicals Laudato Si and Fratelli Tutti. Two children in Jeremiah class summarised their learning by saying: ‘We are all coming together as brothers and sisters to care for our common home. It links to the theme of solidarity and the scripture story of The Good Samaritan’. In Year 3, all children had excellent knowledge of the key messages in Laudato Si and discussed what actions they could take in order to steward the world. This week, Mr Langmead also carried out a P4C session on Laudato Si where children generated a range of questions they wished to explore. In Year 1, Miss Hains’s class and Year 2, children looked at the structure of parables and learned that parables contain hidden messages. They explored using metaphors for God- ‘God is a big smile to everyone because he brings joy to everyone. In Reception children discussed what they think is in God’s Kingdom and drew pictures which are now proudly on display in their classroom.
