Investigating pulse in Malachi

In Science this week, Malachi class were investigating the effect exercise has on our heart rate (pulse).
To ensure our investigation would be a ‘fair test’, we identified our independent variable (the variable that will change), controlled variables (the things that stay the same) and dependent variable (what we will measure). Our independent variable was the amount of time that we exercised for (10 seconds, 20 seconds and 40 seconds.) Our controlled variables were: the people who were exercising (Ava, Anis and Nahome); the type of exercise (running on the spot) and the time given
to rest in between each round of exercise. Our dependent variable was our heart rate, which we measured in beats per minute (bpm).

This investigation was a fair test as the only variable being changed was the time spent exercising.
The majority of the class accurately predicted that heart rate would increase with exercise, as the heart needed to pump faster to supply the body with more oxygen.
