Our senses

In Science we have been learning about our sense of smell. We went on a walk around the school building using our sense of smell to explore the differences.

In class we played a guessing game with blindfolds and bottles, taking turns to guess what was inside. Then we checked to see if we were right. We learnt that using just our sense of smell is not always enough as we needed our sense of sight to help us!

We had lots of fun finding out what was inside the bottles!

For our topic, ‘The Beach’ we learnt about different sea creatures. We found them under the ‘sea’ and named and labelled them:

Hear, Map, Step, Speak

This week Year 1 have enjoyed listening to our story ‘Little Red Riding Hood’. We created a whole class story map with pictures and actions, and then went on to draw our own maps of the story.

We used our story maps to role play the story in small groups which we then showcased to the class. It was lots of fun!

In Maths this week, we have been practising using the ‘Bar Model’ to find number bonds to 10.

We used numicon and unifix cubes to find the missing numbers, and then wrote number sentences to match.

In Science, we have learnt the difference between natural and man-made materials. We enjoyed looking at beach pictures and sorting them into groups of natural materials and those made by people.

Welcome to Year 1

Welcome to Year 1!

The children have settled in well to their new environment.

This week we have practised number recognition and ordering numbers. The children have enjoyed role-playing our story ‘Little Red Riding Hood’.

We also shared our ‘Beach’ projects with our friends!
