# Maths class: Perimeter and Area

Today in Numeracy, we were learning about the perimeter of shapes. To consolidate our understanding of what perimeter is, we went out onto the playground and worked in groups to measure the perimeters of numerous different shapes which had been drawn on the ground using chalk. We also measured the perimeter of the entire front playground and came together to compare our measurements.

# Chinese New Year

Today in class, we have been celebrating the Chinese New Year.

Chinese New Year is also called Lunar New Year because the calendar year is based on the moon in relationship to where it is with the sun. It is not just China that celebrates Chinese New Year. It is a bank holiday in countries such as Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, North Korea, Singapore, South Korea, and Vietnam.

Chinese families decorate their homes with special posters with well wishes written on them. Traditionally it would have been written on red paper (this is a lucky colour) and with black ink. For convenience these are now printed. Some modern ones even have cartoon characters on them.

We made our own well wishes cards in class J

# Internet Safety Day in Year 5

Last week, for Internet Safety Day, Jonah class took part in a drama lesson.

The children were given a number of different scripts, each depicting a different scenario based around consent on the internet. For example, one script was about whether or not someone had given consent for their picture to be used on the Internet.

The children were split into groups to act out each script. Then, we had a whole class discussion after every performance about the issues raised in each. Not only did the class enjoy the acting, but they also learned a lot about how to be safe on the internet.

# Viking Decision Making: Jonah Debating Lesson

Today we had a class debate. We pretended to be Vikings in our different towns. We rotated different roles of chief, arguing for and arguing against. We learnt about the many different and difficult decisions the Vikings had to make. We had to make sure our arguments were worthwhile and tried to persuade the rest of our town to agree to our option. There were many different scenarios we had to debate such as whether to raid Britain or not and to stay for winter or not.

We had a lot of fun during this lesson and have some very persuasive students! 😛

Once the individual town debates happened, the chief from each town would stand up and share their verdict with the class.

# Greek Pot Making

Today in Jonah class, we were learning about Greek pottery. Greek pots are important because they tell us so much about how life was in Athens and other ancient Greek cities. Greek pots came in all sorts of shapes and sizes depending on their purpose, and were often beautifully decorated with scenes from daily life.

Today, we all designed our very own Greek pots and then, later in the afternoon, we made them using clay. It was a very fun (and MESSY) lesson but our creations are beautiful so it was worth it! 🙂
