This morning we had our year group mass at Church to celebrate Ash Wednesday. Year 3 enjoyed leading the mass to celebrate the start of Lent as it gave us time to pray to God, think about things we may want to give up for Lent or things we may want to take up and receive the ashes at the end of the service.

During Literacy today we explored rehearsing sentences orally through the model text about Mowgli going missing. We looked at the model text newspaper report and participated in a role play performance in groups to understand each section of the report.

Today, year 3 were lucky to have a visit from Mrs Foley from the Maths Hub and she introduced us to fractions. We looked at parts and the whole. After discussion, we came to the conclusion that the parts are always smaller than the whole. The whole can be represented by anything. For example, If the head is the whole, the eyes are part of the whole. If the body is the whole, the head and arms are part of the whole. A whole can also have more than 2 parts. We concluded that the whole is the sum of all the parts. We also looked at the part whole model to help us visualise the whole and the parts.

A big well done to Christopher and Harry for working their way up to gold on our Gospel Values chart. Both Christopher and Harry have been following the Gospel Values recently and they have been producing some great work, especially in handwriting with Ms Nazir. Keep up the good work! Mr Sands, Mr Devereux and the rest of Y3 Isaiah class are really proud!

Today in Maths we looked at showing numbers in the form of dienes and vice versa. We used dienes, whiteboards and pens to explore how we can show numbers in the form of words, numerals and dienes. We had lots of fun and it was an exciting end to such a great week!

This week in Literacy we presented our new model text- ‘How to make a jam sandwich’ to the rest of the class so we could really understand what our instructions needed to tell us to do. We acted it out as if we were doing a vlog, using signposts and actions which has made us feel more confident about writing instructional texts. All that spreading butter and jam was hard work!

Since starting in Year 3 in September, we have been learning how to play the recorder. We have had lots of fun learning how to play the recorder with our music teacher. Mr Sands can’t believe how much we have improved! We’re looking forward to continuing to learn how to play Jingle Bells on the recorder in the next few weeks.

This afternoon, Isaiah class enjoyed their chat with Sister Chris. They discussed the presence of God within our human experience and how our relationship with God can be strengthened through prayer. The children spoke about the importance of thanking God for His creations. Sister Chris spoke about the Glory Be to God and explained that his prayer thanks God.

Today we visited the Natural History Museum as part of our Science topic- Fossils. We had lots of fun travelling to the museum and looking at different types of fossils whilst we were there, that related to our learning. What a perfect way to end our first half-term in Year 3!

Yesterday we took part in a fun and exciting virtual workshop for Science about fossils! We discussed what a fossil was and looked at 3D images of fossils on card using the 3D glasses we were given!
