Investigating plants in our Local Area!

On Wednesday 24th May Year 1 decided to go on an investigation hunt around our local area. This term we have been exploring ‘Plants’ in Science. We have looked at both garden and wild plants and we wanted to see how many we could find around Poplar. As we came through Poplar Park, we decided to stop and investigate as it was full of beautiful flowers. We even saw a Bee taking some pollen from the centre of a flower. When we went back to class we made a list of all the plants we saw and spoke about the similarities and differences between them. Take a look at some of our pictures!

Tobit visit the Prayer Garden!

On Wednesday, Tobit class visited the Prayer Garden and had a wonderful time honouring Mary and celebrating the start of the month of Mary.

We started by saying the Hail Mary together as a class.

Then three children in the class led the Daily Act of Worship for the rest of the class. We sat in a circle, then our teacher read to us a special prayer about Mary called the Memorare.  We then reflected on this passage, saying a quiet prayer to God in our hearts. Finally, we heard that our mission for the week was tell our Mum’s and Dad’s that we love them.

After that, a few of the children in the class read their prayers from the prayer book to the rest of the class.

We ended our special time in the Prayer Garden by singing the Ave Maria together as a class.

It was such a special experience and we can’t wait to visit the garden again!

Your child needs to write a sentence for each of the words relating to the work we have done for our Science topic on Plants.

Maths

We have been focusing on fractions this week. We looked at equivalences in fractions at the beginning of the week (e.g. 1/2=2/4). Then we learned how to add fractions together. The rules for adding fractions together are: 1. Keep the denominators (bottom number) the same. 2. Add the numerators together (top numbers). Please support your child in completing the attached worksheet on adding fractions.

Year 1 Ezra Visits the Prayer Garden

On Tuesday, Ezra class visited the Prayer Garden and had a wonderful time honouring Mary and celebrating the start of the month of Mary.

We started by saying the Hail Mary together as a class.

Then three children in the class led the Daily Act of Worship for the rest of the class. We sat in a circle, then our teacher read to us from the Catholic Children’s Bible. She read a passage from Luke where the Angel Gabriel appears to Mary and tells her she would have a baby who would be God’s son, and that she should call him Jesus. We then reflected on this passage, saying a quiet prayer to God in our hearts. Finally, we heard that our mission for the week was to do something helpful at home.

After that, a few of the children in the class read their prayers from the prayer book to the rest of the class.

We ended our special time in the Prayer Garden by singing the Ave Maria together as a class.

It was such a special experience and we can’t wait to visit the garden again!
