Reception Spring 2 – Week 1
We have had an exciting week back after half term. Some of the things we have been up to this week are making pancakes, learning about odd and even numbers and new phonics sounds!
Phonics: This week we started Phase 3, set 8. We have introduced these following sounds: ch – ng – sh – th.
In Maths, we have introduced the concept of odd and even numbers. An even number is a number that can be divided into two equal groups. An odd number is a number that cannot be divided into two equal groups. Even numbers end in 2, 4, 6, 8 and 0 regardless of how many digits they have (we know the number 5,917,624 is even because it ends in a 4!).
For R.E, we learned about Shrove Tuesday and that it is also called pancake day. We now know it is the day before Ash Wednesday which is the beginning of lent. We then wrote our own pancake recipes and pretended to make our own pancakes in the role play area.
St Patrick’s Trip to the Idea store
This Tuesday, St patrick class went on a trip to the Idea store for the morning. While there we enjoyed story time and then had a chance to check out the children’s library. We were able to read information books, comic books and a whole lot more. The children really enjoyed being able to choose their own books and read with the adults who came with us. A big thank you to the parent’s that volunteered to help with the trip!
Celebrating and learning about Shrove Tuesday in Reception 21/2/24
Today we have learnt that Shrove Tuesday is celebrated the day before Lent starts. Also, we have mix some ingredients to send the mix home to make pancakes with our families. Lots of fun!! 🙂
RE: Decorating cupcakes to give to others in need
Today Reception children have decorated the cupcakes the parents have kindly donated to give to people in need. In RE we are learning different ways on showing our love to others and this is a lovely way where children learn to act on their love to others as Jesus has called us to do.
Last week of Spring 1 in Reception
In Maths we have learnt about weight using balance scales; children have learnt how to use them independently. We have talked about how we feel when we hold heavy or light objects and how we can distinguish them. Children were able to use mathematical vocabulary when comparing different objects “The rock is heavier than the feather” “The chair is lighter than the table”
This week we started Phase 3, set 7. We have introduced these following sounds: y – z – zz – qu

Week 4- Reception
This week in Reception, we have been looking at more farm animals in literacy. The children enjoyed writing about what farm animals eat. In Phonics, we have started phase 3 and have been learning the sounds, j, v, w and x. In Maths, we have been writing subtraction number sentences and have had lots of fun using ten frames in the classroom. This weeks R.E was very exciting as we had Father Andrew visit us to teach us all the Glory Be prayer. We then made a prayer wall with all the prayers we have been writing at home in our prayer book.
Father Andrew visit to Reception: “Glory to be” prayer
Today Father Andrew came to show Reception children the prayer “Glory be”
GLORY BE TO THE FATHER, AND TO THE SON, AND TO THE HOLY SPIRIT; AS IT WAS IN THE BEGINNING, AND NOW, AND EVER SHALL BE, AMEN. (shorter version for Reception children)
Week 3 Reception
This week in reception, we have been learning about hand raised animals on farms after reading the book “Will you be my Mother?”. During the mornings we have been writing describing sentences about animals you would find on a farm. In phonics, we have been revising our phase 2 sounds with lots of blending and segmenting games. In Maths, we have been using ten frames to start to write adding number sentences. We learned about the story of feeding the 5000 in R.E this week and had lots of fun decorating fish on the art table.
